By Captain Jason Webber, USCG-licensed captain, Myrtle Beach Sport Fishing, Murrells Inlet, SC.
The short answer
A 4-hour reef and wreck trip out of Murrells Inlet starts at $950. A full 12-hour run to the Gulf Stream is $3,200. Everything else we do falls somewhere in between, and that is the whole price list. No “call for details,” no per-person maths that changes once you are on the phone. Prices are per boat, for the whole group, up to six anglers.

We publish our rates because we got tired of being asked. But a price list on its own is not that useful, because the real question underneath “how much does it cost” is usually “what am I actually getting for that.”
Why the price goes up with distance, not just time
A $950 trip and a $3,200 trip are not the same day with different price tags. They are different distances, different water and different fish, and a different amount of boat and fuel to get there and back. Running 70 to 100 miles to the Gulf Stream safely takes a bigger fuel load, a longer crew day and heavier tackle than working the reefs inside 15 miles. The number tracks the capability, not the clock.
What is included in every trip
- A USCG-licensed captain and an experienced first mate.
- All rods, reels, tackle and bait, including the deep-drop gear and electric reels on the trips that use them.
- South Carolina saltwater fishing licence coverage for everyone aboard. You do not need your own; see the licence rules.
- Life jackets for all ages, coolers and ice for your catch.
- Fish cleaning at the dock on request.
What is not included
- Gratuity for the crew.
- Food and drink. Bring what your group likes, in non-glass containers.
- Anything you want to bring for yourself: sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat, soft-soled shoes.
Private charter vs. head boat: why per-person pricing looks cheaper and usually is not
Head boats sell seats. A private charter sells the boat. At $950 for four hours, six anglers pay about $158 each; four pay about $238 each. For that you get the whole boat, a captain who fishes for your group only, no strangers at the rail, and a schedule that is yours. Per-seat pricing looks lower until you count the elbows.
Deposits, cancellations and weather
A $250 deposit books your date, with the balance due on the day of the charter. Weather is the captain’s call: if we decide it is not safe or fishable, we reschedule at no charge or refund your deposit in full.
Is a longer trip worth the money?
- $950 to $1,200, 4-Hour Reef & Wreck Charter: sea bass, sheepshead, flounder, red drum, Spanish mackerel inside 15 miles. The family and first-timer day.
- $1,200 to $1,500, 6-Hour Offshore Day Charter: king mackerel, cobia and amberjack on the 20 to 30 mile reefs.
- $1,800, 8-Hour Offshore Day Charter: grouper, snapper, triggerfish and amberjack on the deep ledges, our most-booked trip.
- $2,200, 8-Hour Offshore Day Extended: the same eight hours run 35 to 55 miles for a bigger class of bottom fish.
- $2,600, 10-Hour Continental Shelf Charter: the outer shelf for grouper, red and vermilion snapper and triggerfish.
- $2,800, 10-Hour Gulf Stream Deep Drop: tilefish and snowy grouper from 400 to 900 feet on electric reels.
- $3,200, 12-Hour Gulf Stream Trolling Charter: mahi, wahoo, tuna, sailfish and blue marlin in the Gulf Stream.
Every fish named above has an entry in our species guide with its distance, depth and months. The two boats, Triton for up to six and Trophy for up to three, are on the boats page.
How to get the most out of a shoulder-season booking
September and October have fewer boats on the water, shorter lead times and some of the best fishing of the year. If your dates are flexible, a fall weekday is the easiest booking we have, and the October forecast explains why the fishing is worth it.
